New Member Feature ! Dark Knits Etsy

My Name is Nikki and I currently live in Edmonton, AB.

What you sell and why?

I sell corsetry, latex clothing and all sorts of accessories, I do it because I love it, the constant creative challenge of trying to make new things and refining my processes to make something better and better has become a passion of mine.

When and how you got started?

I got started knitting scarves just to get some creative itch out and then moved to tearing apart old clothes, seeing how they were made and turning them into something new/better. Then I discovered corsetry and fell in love with it, I started tearing apart mass produced corsets and trying to learn how to build my own... well my Grammie caught wind of this and spilt the beans that she once made corsets, she passed on the finer bits of that knowledge to me. Now i've been sewing so long and neglecting my knitting that i've forgotten how to knit... in the words of my Grammie "Nikki's knitting is holier than the pope" :)

How did you decide on your shop name?

It was suggested that I call the shop 'Dark Knots' in reference to my blacksheep-ish-ness and corset knots, but at the time I was far more competent in my knitting skills than my sewing & corsetry skills, so it got named Dark Knits. I somewhat regret not going with 'dark knots' instead, as the corsetry end of things seems to be where i'm headed with it, but I don't have the heart to change it, and my roots are pretty firmly planted.

Is there an item in your shop you enjoyed making the most and why?

Lately, hats... oh my goodness hats! They are super time consuming, but I just love them, they are a challenge, but the finished product can compliment an outfit perfectly! On a side note; my studio is starting to look a bit like a mad hatter works here because I seem to find myself working on hats to match my outfits in my spare time.

What’s your favourite part of the selling experience?

One of the joys of corsetry is that I can give women a figure they never thought they'd have, making them feel incredible. Their reaction when they get the final product and its everything they've wanted is the best by far!

Do you have a day job?

Yes, For now- I would love nothing more than to be able to work in my studio and make a living at it, however i'm not quite there yet... constantly working towards that goal though.
8. Are there other crafts you’d like to try?

I have ALWAYS wanted to try glass blowing, however I have yet to find anywhere local to teach me.

Please provide 5 random facts about yourself to help the team get to know you better. Thank you!

-By day I am an engineer, by night a sewing and crafting machine
-I play rollerderby! I play with STAHR (the st. albert heavenly rollers), they call me screamstress- likely because I never shut up.
-My studio space was coined the 'little house of horrors' by my models- because I have so much strange stuff crammed in there.
-Going with the little house of horrors theme; for christmas I was gifted an anotomical skeleton, I named him Leonard, because 'he's dead Jim'. *BEST CHRISTMAS GIFT EVER!*
-This year I am taking the leap into bridal wear. Its something I have always wanted to try, and after

making a good friends wedding dress- I think I finally have the confidence to dive in there!

Cheers!
