DIY: Personalized Christmas Ornaments

Personalized Christmas Ornaments

First, I traced the cookie cutters onto the back of some pretty Christmas paper.

Then, unfortunately the Christmas paper I had was a little thin so to make it a bit sturdier I glued it to some plain card stock.

Carefully I cut out the shapes. I think this was the biggest pain.

Next, I punched a hole in the top of the card stock to thread ribbon through to hang on a tree. (I love my Crop-a-dile Big bite!!!)

Now it was time to line the cookie cutter in glue.

Now time to attach the cardstock/paper to the cookie cutter and tie on the ribbon.

Finally, once I got the pictures printed and glued into the shapes!!!! I took a cd marker and wrote my son's name and the year on the bottom of the cookie cutter so we would always know these are from Christmas 2011.

1. My name is Heather and I live in Edmonton

2. I sell my art because art is what I love to do and I want to share it with others. I usually work with graphite or paints

3. Well, art has always been a part of my life since I was a kid. I decided I wanted to try to make it my career when I started majoring in art and design in University. I started on etsy last August to help promote myself, get to know others in the community, and of course make a little extra income for school.

4. Oh, my shop name isn't that exciting. I started using etsy to buy stuff before I started a shop and I was using xheather for some other accounts on the web so I used it for etsy as well. It kind of stuck and I don't mind it!

5. Any of the personalized sketches are definitely my favourite items in my shop. I get to know my customers very well and the images I get to draw are usually adorable pets or loved ones. It's very fun and personable. I enjoy putting all the excitement of the customers and myself into their drawings!

6. I'd have to say getting to know my customers. It's a great community on etsy and we all learn from each other. Hearing the stories of a customer receiving their piece of art or sketch in the mail is so exciting. I'm glad to know I can create something that can mean so much to another person.

7. My day job is being a full time student. I also work 2 other jobs on the side. As crazy as it sounds, my other jobs aren't that demanding and I work them because I enjoy being busy and having something to do all the time. That and I have to pay the bills, right?

8. I would love to try every craft ever! I love crafting just as much as I love drawing or painting. In my classes I'm actually working on incorporating embroidery into my work. A few things I want to learn in the near future is knitting, crocheting, working with leather, and working with resin.

9. A few random facts about Heather!

I'm a huge nerd at heart. ie. Pokemon! I found a love for playing soccer last year and am on 2 teams currently. I'm minoring in Math in University. I wish I was a natural redhead. I want to travel the world!

We sell hand knit dishcloths and dryer sheets, one inch pin back buttons, and other seasonal items that strike our fancy. We’re obsessed with knitting and love the idea of helping others keep their homes clean and eco-friendly. Making the buttons quenches our thirst for design and creativity.

3. When and how you got started?

Our shop opened in March of 2009. We had just started knitting dishcloths like grandma used to make growing up, and saw the potential to share the knitted love with others. Also, we saw the online market as an eventual outlet for our interests in art and design.

4. How did you decide on your shop name?

The name started off as an idea for a personal blog that never really took off. It plays with the idea of being a wandering soul that has decided to settle down and create a more permanent home.

5. Is there an item in your shop you enjoyed making the most and why?

We enjoy sitting down and knitting dishcloths together, usually in front of the TV.

6. What’s your favourite part of the selling experience?

Having the opportunity to turn a hobby into a successful (and hopefully one day lucrative) business.

7. Do you have a day job?

Tif is currently finishing up an undergraduate degree in Sociology, and Jen is a substitute teacher.

8. Are there other crafts you’d like to try?

We always talk about eventually building a big garage/shop for arts and crafts such as wood working, welding, painting, silk screening, pottery among other things. Jen has dabbled in weaving and felting, while Tif enjoys photography.

How to Check Etsy Front Page Features

Did you know that on Craftcult you can check to see if your shop has been on the Front Page of Etsy? You can also check to see if any treasuries you've made have been featured on the Front Page. Here's how.....

Lists Featuring items by.....

Go to Craftcult and click on The Vault. Then click on Search for Member about a third of the way down in the middle of your screen. A drop down menu will appear saying "Lists featuring items by" (red circle). Leave that as is and to the right next to Etsy Username (blue circle) type in the name of your shop and click on Enter. Craftcult will then load any treasuries that have been on the Front Page of Etsy that have included an item from your shop! You can then see who made the treasury and when it was on the Front Page of Etsy. You can also click on Get a Screenshot to either view the treasury as it appeared on Etsy or download it for your records. Very handy!

Lists made by....

In order to check and see if any treasuries you've made have been featured on the Front Page or Etsy you do the same steps as above except click on the drop down menu (red circle) and choose Lists Made By. Then enter your Etsy Username (blue circle), click Enter and a list of all treasuries you've made that have been featured on the Front Page of Etsy will appear. Again this list will tell you the date they appeared on Etsy and you can view or download a screenshot.

I sell supplies for crafting. I noticed a lot of the top shops on Etsy are suppliers and I had a few supplies that I thought people might like

3. When and how you got started?
This is actually my second shop on Etsy and wanted to give the supply business a try.

4. How did you decide on your shop name?
The concept behind the shop was to supply small items or unique crafting supplies that people may need. The name Li'l Things Count really just grew put of the concept that sometimes it's the little things we need/add to a project that finish it off.

5. Is there an item in your shop you enjoyed making the most and why?
I don't really make any items in the shop but my favorite item that I sell are mini clothes pins, they are just so cute.

6. What’s your favourite part of the selling experience?
I enjoy helping people with various craft projects and hearing about their ideas.

7. Do you have a day job?
My day job is being a Mom to my two boys (9 and 6 yrs old) and I squeeze in running my Etsy shops where I can.

8. Are there other crafts you’d like to try?
I would really like to try my hand at sewing, I bought myself a machine but just haven't found the time to sit down and master and kind of skills

I sell digital products – everything from digital scrapbooking papers, artwork, customizable posters/prints, and more! I had been doing graphic design in my full-time job as well as some freelance work for the last 10 years, and I have always wanted to start my own business. As I was coming to the end of my maternity leave, it seemed like a good time to give it a try.

3. When and how you got started?

One of the things I had been doing over the last few years was creating digital scrapbook pages – first for myself, then for friends and family, and eventually I was selling them to other people as well. I wanted everything to be my own designs, so I started creating all of my own digital papers, embellishments, etc. I figured why not sell some of the papers and other items that I was creating, so I opened my Etsy shop in September 2011.

4. How did you decide on your shop name?

Well, it is not the most creative name, lol! My last name starts with a K, hence MichelleK Designs.

5. Is there an item in your shop you enjoyed making the most and why?

I really enjoy creating all the items in my shop, but I especially like creating artwork for kids—probably because I use a lot of it in my own kids’ rooms.

6. What’s your favourite part of the selling experience?

I love doing custom work and hearing some of the fun ways that people would like to customize my artwork

7. Do you have a day job?

My maternity leave is up in January, but I can’t see myself going back to anything full-time. I’m really enjoying my shop on Etsy and hope to pick up some other graphic design projects, as well as spend time with my 2 kids.

8. Are there other crafts you’d like to try?

I love crafting! I wish I had more time and space to do it! I do some card making and traditional scrapbooking. I also like to draw and sew – all of which I’d love to do more of! Mostly these days I do crafts with my 3 year old, lol!

The first day of 2012 is a bright and sunny one here. Most people would probably not guess it, but the prairies are one of the sunniest areas in Canada. Five prairies cities top the list in fact.I imagine that many people are eagerly beginning new Painting/Drawing/Whatever A Day today. I tried to do this once and petered out around February. I'm not sure how successful I'll be either as I go back to school next week. But I'm going to give it a good try with a book I bought a couple of years ago called The Crafter's Devotional by Barbara R. Call. The bumper book of 365 creative ideas are coded in different ways such as Monday-Sunday, 1-365 and by category such as ideas, journalling and collaborating. Or you can pick a page at random and get going. I'm indebted to my friend and fellow Etsian Craft Quotient for telling me about this book. Since craft books can be hit or miss, friend recommendations tend to be a sure thing.In fact day #1 is journalling. I do keep a paper journal, but I often prefer the online ones. I buy cute little notebooks and then usually they get misplaced around the house :-D Maybe I'm just an idea squirrel at heart. Sometimes I find half-filled journals from when I was younger and it makes me glad the Internet wasn't around back then :-D. We don't really get a feel for how we grow and change over time. Memory isn't as reliable either.

The activities are pretty free-form and a variety of genres and techniques are represented, which must have been hard to do. Beads, wire, collage, stamping and mark making are just some of the things to be explored. Sometimes it's easier to just have an "assignment" to try instead of thinking up something on your own. The inclusion of personal and family history was interesting to me because interviewing family members and preserving family history is an art unto itself. This book will definitely keep crafty types busy all year long!

Alberta Eats - Almond Cherry Bars

what you'll need...

1 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
2 cups flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 1/2 cups chocolate chips
1 cup maraschino cherries coarsely chopped and drained
1/2 cup slivered almonds
1/2 cup shredded coconut

what you need to do...

preheat oven to 350
cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy
beat in egg and almond extract
stir in flour, baking powder and salt until just blended.
stir in chocolate chips, cherries, almonds and coconut
spread into a lightly greased 9x13 pan
bake 25-30 minutes
cool completely before cutting.

what i sometimes do differently...
i skip the chocolate. don't get me wrong. i LOVE chocolate. but i love almond and maraschino cherries all by themselves. the consistency is a bit different without the chocolate but i like them better without.
i eat enough chocolate. one recipe without it is ok. i will not lose my chocolate lovers club membership for it. i'm sure.

Alberta Eats - Peppermint Patty Brownies

Peppermint Patty Brownies

1 1/2 cups margarine
3 cups white sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
5 eggs
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
24 small peppermint patties

Mix butter, sugar, and vanilla. Beat in eggs till well blended.
Stir in flour, cocoa, baking powder, and salt. Blend well.
Reserve 2 cups of batter, set aside.
Grease 13x9x2 inch pan.
Spread remaining batter in prepared pan.
Arrange peppermint patties in a single layer over batter about 1/2 inch apart.
Spread reserved 2 cups batter over patties.
Bake 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 50-55 minutes till brownies begin to pull away from sides of pan. Cool completely in pan on wire rack. Enjoy!!!

Alberta Eats - Breakfast Pizza

Mmmmm....Breakfast Pizza
As always in cooking do your own thing. This is approx.

6 slices bread (line the pan)white or brown
2 lbs bulk sausage meat
1 c grated cheddar cheese
1 1/2 c milk
1 doz eggs
3 green onions
1 can mushroom soup
1 tsp dry mustard
salt and pepper
1 can sliced mushrooms
chopped black olives

Brown and Drain sausage ..set aside
Trim crusts from bread and butter on both sides.Line a rectangular cake pan with the bread.
Spread cooked sausage over bread then green onion and cheese.
Beat 12 eggs with 1 1/2 c milk, mustard, salt, and pepper until fairly beaten
Pour all the egg mixture over the bread..
Cover with foil and refrigerate overnight.
Before baking mix 1/2 c milk with soup and pour over casserole.
Sprinkle on mushrooms and olives.

Bake in 350 F oven for 1 1/2 hrs or until set in the middle.

Serves 12 ******If your not a piggy !!!!!

Suggested serve with fresh fruit cocktail and muffins mmmmm good

FOOTNOTE: this goes a long way if your doing a brunch but be warned make lots its good reheated at dinner even..
I now use a lasagne pan if my family is coming.. Just adjust the ingredients accordingly..

Alberta Eats - Skor Bars & Cuban Lunch

Skor Bar Squares

3/4 Cup Butter

3/4 Cup Packed Brown Sugar

1 1/2 Cups Flour

1 Can Sweetened Condensed Milk

2 tbsp Butter

1 Pkg Chocolate Chip

1 Pkg Skor Bits

Cream first 3 ingredients together until well blended.
Press evenly into 9x13 pan.
Bake @ 350 for 20 minutes or until golden brown.
Cool on rack while preparing filling.
Heat sweetened condensed milk and butter in saucepan , stirring constantly over medium heat for 5 to 10 minutes or until thickened.
Spread over baked base and bake 12 minutes, or until golden brown.
Sprinkle chocolate chips over evenly, and put back in oven for 2 minutes.
Remove from oven, and spread chips with spatula.
Sprinkle toffee bits on top, pressing lightly into chocolate.
Chill to set. Cut into squares.

Makes 4 dozen, freezes well.

Cuban Lunch

2 pkg Peanut Butter Chips

1 pkg Chocolate Chips

1 1/2 Cups Crushed Ripple Potato Chips

1 Cup Crushed Unsalted Peanuts

Mini Muffin Liners

Melt chips in microwave.

Stir in peanuts and potato chips.

Drop in paper cups and refrigerate.

"In regards to the “studio” photo:

What you see is... my living room! This is the best place in the house for me to craft: it has the best lighting, the most space and the most comfortable seating. And, most importantly, the TV since I watch movies while crafting! The view in this room changes daily, depending on the project I am working on, and currently has a series of faery poop (AKA glitter) coating everything. My husband tolerates me and my hobbies so well....

One of the most important items you’ll notice is the orange mug with Eeyore on it. The reason this is so important is because it is the receptacle of coffee, and coffee makes this little world go around. The bookshelf on the left holds tools and unfinished projects, and the one on the right holds supplies. It is my way of organizing the unorganizable!

What you do not see is the cat post behind me that hosts a pair of devious hooligans, as well as the dog bed behind the mini tables that normally contain another pair of devious critters, but who serve very well for comedy relief as well as an occasional distraction. They normally sleep, and are simply content to have “mom” home during the day!"

Rosemary Cashews - recipe provided by Ramona of KidsLoveLetters

1 lb (500 g) roasted, unsalted cashews
2 tbsp minced fresh rosemary leaves
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper (I double this for extra spice)
2 tsp brown sugar
1 tbsp salt
1 tbsp unsalted butter, melted

Preheat oven to 350 F. Spread the cashews on a sheet pan. Toast in oven until warm, about 5 minutes.

In a large bowl, combine the rosemary, cayenne, sugar, salt and butter. Thoroughly toss the warm cashews with the spiced butter and serve warm (or room temperature).

Dinnon and Bonnie are sharing this shortbread recipe with us today. I'm digging Dinnon's hat! Thanks guys!

Whipped Shortbread:

1 lb. Butter
1 tsp Vanilla
1 Cup Icing Sugar
3 cups Flour
1/2 cup Cornstarch

* Blend butter to soften. Add vanilla & mix.
* Add dry ingredients slowly, about 1 cup at a time,
mixing consistently, scraping down sides.
* Once everything is combined, beat well with electric mixer.
* Drop by spoonful's onto ungreased cookie sheet,
and bake for 10 to 12 minutes @ 350 F.

There is something really special about cherishing your loved ones by proudly wearing their birthstones. I got this recipe off of Bonnie's (stuf'd & snottub) blog. The cake is called Mocha Cake but this is actually the recipe for the icing as it's my understanding that any Chocolate Cake will do...scratch or from a box.

Mocha Cake Icing
* In a bowl, whip up 1 cup of Butter (not margarine).
* To that add 1/4 Cup of Cocoa, 1 tsp Vanilla and 2 cups of Icing Sugar.
* In a small dish, mix 1/4 cup hot water, and 1 tsp instant coffee.
* Add to icing mixture, and then add up to another 2 cups of icing sugar. Depending on desired sweetness and consistency.
* Increase to high, and blend 5 minutes.

Bonnie added a Ruffle Icing technique to her cake. didn't it turn out so cool?! Awesome job Bonnie. Thanks for letting me share this one!

Tamara found this recipe on macheesmo. The version below was written out by Tamara and can be found on her blog.

Homemade Freezer Egg McMuffins
eggs
canadian bacon (or ham)
cheddar cheese
english muffins

Spray a muffin tin, and crack the eggs into the tin. Place in the oven at 350F for 15-20 minutes.

Toast the english muffins (either in the toaster, or on a pan in the oven with the eggs), grate the cheese and lay everything out while the eggs are baking.

Then it's simply assembly... stack the egg, ham and a sprinkling of cheese on each english muffin, top and wrap in plastic wrap. I then place them in ziplock bags for the freezer.

When you want to make them to eat, put them in the oven (toaster oven) for 25 minutes at 350F.

IF you want to eat them right away, they only need to go in the oven for 5-10 minutes.

You can reheat in the microwave, but they get kinda soggy.

2. 4. How did you decide on your shop name? HEKKAL is the name of the company I own with my husband. It is a blend of my initials (HEK) and his first name (Kal). Hyde is what my friends call me.

1. 5. Is there an item in your shop you enjoyed making most and why? I love making everything, but I find the hand-dyed items the most rewarding. It’s always exciting seeing how the colours turn out. It’s different every time, which is what I like about not having a conventional job!

I feel like there is a handmade revolution going on, and you either get it, or you don’t. I understand that sometimes Wal-Mart is the only solution, but shopping handmade is like recycling: Every little bit counts.

1. 7. Do you have a day job? I run a home-based business owned by my husband and myself, and I am a full-time mom to my 20-month-old and 6-year-old. Whenever possible I also take jobs outside the home to support our business.

"To the right of my desk is my design wall - nothing fancy, just some inexpensive white flannel tacked to the wall. Easy to take down if needed, but large enough for a good size quilt. The blue, yellow and purple blocks are swap blocks I've received over the past year from fellow quilters all over the world. This will be my next big quilt to finish as soon as I figure out how I will put them together"

"In the small space between the door and the closet is shelving where I keep all my buttons and knick knacks. The picture at the top is a pencil drawing done by me when I was in school studying to be an Architectural Technologist. I think I only got a C on it, but I am still proud of it!"

Jewelry mostly. Because you can make jewelry with anything, felt, fabric, chain, lace. You can be so creative and that's why we love creating necklaces, they are great for any occasion.

3. When and how you got started?

August 2011. My sister and I played around with the idea of starting our own shop on Etsy, we needed a reason to create, our drawers were filled with everything we made for each other over the past 20 years So we decided to share our passion with the world and start a shop on Etsy.

4. How did you decide on your shop name?

We wanted something that defined us as sisters. I thought of Double Dutch. Because there were two of us and we are both 100% Dutch. My sister later looked up Double in Dutch and so we agreed Dubbele Dutch Crafts was the name.

5. Is there an item in your shop you enjoyed making the most and why?

I loved making everything but definitely the Amelie Necklace was my favourite, I was proud of the design, colours and look. It was the first necklace to sell from our shop when we opened.

6. What’s your favourite part of the selling experience?

I love packaging the products and getting ready to send it to the costumer.

7. Do you have a day job?

I work for a dance studio in Calgary doing all the Social Media and Graphic Design work. I work from home so having Dubbele Dutch allows me the freedom to create whenever i want.

8. Are there other crafts you’d like to try?

Yes, lots! everyday my thoughts are overwhelmed with more things to create. I have a beading loom at home in Ontario that i would love to learn and create with.

2. What you sell and why?

I sell many things – with the recent opening of time I’ve had, I needed to find a way to fill it best, so I make whatever comes to mind – clay sculptures, hair accessories, jewelry, magnets, decorations, wreaths.... ideas are in abundance, and I find ways to make them tangible!

3. When and how you got started?

I started with doodles when I was a little girl, and when I was introduced to glue it kind of stuck to me. (HA! Pun intended!) I grew up in a small town, and art courses and opportunities were limited, but when I moved to Edmonton at 17 years old I was introduced to many other opportunities, and I’ve been crafting on and off since then. I have always had the need to keep my hands busy no matter what I am doing, and remember being scolded as a child for constantly fidgeting. While the scolding has stopped, the fidgeting certainly hasn’t!

4. How did you decide on your shop name?

SnapDragonz first came into existence as a reptile and supply company, and is a play on the combination of one of my favourite flowers and favourite hobby (reptiles!) I decided to keep the name as it applies to the crafts.

5. Is there an item in your shop you enjoyed making the most and why?

The polymer clay micromushrooms are probably my favourite. They’re not only easy, but just so darned cute! What I don’t have in my actual Etsy shop that I love, love and love some more are the vivariums. Working with living things – in this case, plants – is magic in itself. You KNOW when you have done something right when the plants speak without words to show you how happy they are!

6. What’s your favourite part of the selling experience?

I love when someone tells me how much they love something I made for them. It not only cheers them up, but myself as well!

7. Do you have a day job?

Not anymore – this is it! I’ve recently picked up a delivery route, but that’s more for a bit of a variety and fresh air.

8. Are there other crafts you’d like to try?

I really want to try out silver smithing. It would be a great addition to the jewelry making process!

9. Here are 5 fun facts about Krystal:

1. Animals are a HUGE part of my life, and extends from fish to dogs and cats, birds, arachnids and reptiles.

2. Many of my friends are guys, and have always referred to me as “one of the guys.... with less testosterone but more attitude!”

3. I am ALWAYS on the go. “Relaxation” isn’t part of my vocabulary, and ADD runs rampant through my veins.

4. I want to go to Australia one day. It’s my dream vacation. Why? Because Australia has the largest variety of reptiles, of course! Granted, many of those are poisonous/venomous, but I figure if I die, at least I’ll die happy!

5. One of my biggest fears (and I don’t have many) is falling. Not heights, but simply falling. (I shattered my knee a few years ago when I tripped and it popped backwards, and then the following year found out what a grade 3 sprain was after I tripped down two stairs.) “Grace” is not my middle name – with good reason!!

Alberta Eats - BBQ Tofu

BBQ Tofu from Jen of StagnantGypsy! Thank you so much for sharing Jen!

I’m one of those gals who can never seem to follow a recipe. A dash of this (sometimes turning into more of a pouf of spices when I’m in the groove), a splash of that and ta da! Dinner is served. I do, however, appreciate when folks take the time to write out guidelines to some of their meal time staples, so I have decided to share one of my favourite dishes: “BBQ” tofu. I don’t think I’ve ever actually bought a jar of BBQ sauce, nor do I own a grill, but feel free to use whatever sauce you keep on hand. Today I’m putting this tofu onto a sandwich but it also tastes great in salads, stir fries or on its own.

BBQ Tofu:

1 Block Tofu (I use extra firm)
1 clean tea towel
½ cup Ketchup
¼ cup molasses
1 tbsp soy sauce or tamari
1 tbsp brown sugar
½ tsp each of cumin, ground ginger, chilli powder or pepper flakes

Cut Tofu block in half, and wrap in a clean tea towel. Place something heavy on top (I use a full flour canister) and let sit for 30 minutes until the moisture has been absorbed by the towel.

Mix ketchup, molasses, soy sauce, brown sugar and spices in a bowl. This can be premixed and stored in the fridge for a few days.

Preheat oven to 350 F

Once the tofu is pressed, lay it out on a foil covered baking sheet (crispier tofu) or in a roasting pan (softer tofu). You can also chop tofu into triangles or however you like at this point, but I find it easier to do this after the tofu is cooked. Note: You can also marinate the tofu in the fridge for the day prior to cooking if you’re more organized than me – the tofu will soak up the flavours and taste lovely

Spread a bit of the sauce on the bottom of the pan, lay the tofu on top and pour remaining sauce equally over each piece. Bake for approximately 30 minutes (my oven isn’t great though so keep an eye on it) rotating half way through. I’ve also left it under the broiler for a few minutes at the end to make the top crispy.

5. Is there an item in your shop you enjoyed making the most and why? I enjoy making larger pieces, abstract and landscape beads. Just got a new bubble bead press LOVE it!

I sell handmade punk accessories, because I like to offer something different. Something you can't just go to a Walmart & buy.

3. When and how you got started?
I started sewing 6 years ago. I wanted to design something wild & fun. I bought my first sewing machine, learned how to thread it, use the different stitches, and started creating!

4. How did you decide on your shop name?
I wanted a fun name. Something with a bit of attitude. I had a few ideas, but I didn't want a name that would limit me. So, I chose Stitches & Stones. The "Stitches" for sewing, and the "Stones" for the possibly of making jewelry in the near future.

5. Is there an item in your shop you enjoyed making the most and why?
I would have to say I enjoyed making the pink furry purse the most. Mostly for the fun of it! I like sewing things with a lot of flashy detail, things with a bit of shock value that helps us stand out from the crowd.

6. What’s your favourite part of the selling experience?
The interactions with my customers. Meeting people from all over the globe. I am a social butterfly by nature.

7. Do you have a day job?
No. I am lucky I can stay at home & focus on my favorite thing in the whole world! Sewing!

Yes. I think I would love to get into glass blowing. Or possibly silversmithing. I love to create with my hands!

2. What you sell and why? I sell sterling silver and precious gemstone jewelry, and am just beginning to work with gold. I love the sparkle and glitter of different gemstones (I'm secretly a geology junkie and gemstones are kind of like the pageant winners of the rock world) and I really love being able to work 3-D forms from metal like silver & gold.

3. When and how you got started? I took a silversmithing class in Vancouver 8 years ago and was hooked! I took the same Level 1 course twice to ensure I had the basic skills down pat. I also loved the idea that I could make my own sterling silver jewelry, as taking this class made me realize I have a jewelry fetish in training.

4. How did you decide on your shop name? It's my first and middle name. Plus the other very original name I had in mind for years.. was already taken. So much for original.

5. Is there an item in your shop you enjoyed making the most and why? I have an item that's drafted for Etsy and ready to list, and I can't bring myself to put up yet! It's a gorgeous vintage bi-colour sapphire that is blue or green depending on the light. I set it in white gold and I love it. I may just have to give it to myself for Christmas! As for stuff that IS online; I love the Montana sapphires I have there, and the Leaf/Twig ring that's there was a simple and fun project. I also have great fun casting small pendants.

6. What’s your favourite part of the selling experience? Making sales! So far I've had better luck selling in person than on Etsy, but I'm soliciting advice from other sellers, trying things like search ads, and refining my photography and tagging skills. So right now I'm enjoying the puzzle of internet sales & marketing!

7. Do you have a day job? I'm a senior-level TV news producer.

8. Are there other crafts you’d like to try? I love painting, and used to paint all the time. I also wish I had the patience for knitting.

I sell felted jewellery and supplies and magnetic jewellery. I love making felt, it is great working with raw wool in my hands and turning it into something new! I love how magnetic beads form their own clasp and cling together!

I started by making lots of magnetic bracelets and wanting to sell them. I am not sure at what point I became obsessed with wool!

4. How did you decide on your shop name?

I wanted to have my actual name in it. I was going to use another name but it was taken and then through trial and error came up with my shop name.

5. Is there an item in your shop you enjoyed making the most and why?

My favourite are my items that incorporate silk within felt. I think it is so neat how you can get two different materials to combine, the contrast is amazing.

Meeting lots of crafty people

2. What you sell and why?

I sell resin jewelry, with a focus on gentleman's accessories. There are lots of trendy and unique items out there for ladies, but it seems harder for gentleman to find affordable trendy pieces. I'm hoping to change that with my resin cuff links, resin-embellished money clips and soon resin belt buckles. I also really enjoy vintage images, and have recently acquired some vintage magazines from the 1920s. I'm incorporating these into my resin pendant designs.

3. When and how you got started?

It all began when I was preparing for my wedding last year. I'm a crafter by nature, and I picked up a DIY bride book. I wanted to give my bridal party unique presents, and this book had some great ideas. It had a very easy resin cuff link project, but the method that it suggested for producing charms/pendants didn't seem to work so well. After many challenges with temperature (including botching 96$ worth of silver plated cuff link bases) I've come see resin as a very rewarding challenge; it seems like no matter how good you are at it there will always be some slight imperfections, but the possibilities for resin crafting are endless.

4. How did you decide on your shop name?

Originally I tried for "Resination", or other names with the word resin in them. However, I found most of them to be taken. Then I remembered that one of the earliest forms of resin is mastic gum. After playing around with the word "Mastic" I found "Mastic Lashes" to be super catchy. I was trying for a 1950s girl to be the brand for my shop, but I strongly believe in not stealing images off the internet, and I'm a poor artist when it comes to drawing faces, so I'm still looking for the perfect avatar. Maybe I will come across a 1950s magazine that I can borrow from in the future.

5. Is there an item in your shop you enjoyed making the most and why?

I love making my cuff links - they are so beautiful and glossy when they are finished, and they look amazing! I also grew up reading comic books and I love sci-fi/fantasy genre so I feel like I may have an insider's view into what some gentlemen might prefer for their cuff links (plus I can solicit advice from my husband). But my list of products seems to be ever-expanding, so I would say that cuff links are my favorite at the moment, soon to be eclipsed by vintage pendants.

6. What’s your favourite part of the selling experience?

I think my favorite part of Etsy in general is the bypassing of the traditional capital system and the removal of the separation between workers and their labour (some Marx for you). But really, valuing handmade items by artists and being able to purchase directly from them is a rare thing these days. Etsy is unique as it allows local sellers to be connected to global buyers without a middleman. Each item tells a story, and that's what's missing in today's shopping experience. I personally enjoy being able to provide additional information to my buyers, such as the inspiration behind a specific piece, or working with them to create a custom piece. It's very rewarding.

7. Do you have a day job?

Yes. Cartographer by day, resin crafter by night. I'm taking a few night classes this year as well, so my resin crafting may be a little neglected until after next April.

8. Are there other crafts you’d like to try?

I would love to get into photography (to provide unique images for my resin projects) and silver-smithing (to allow me to create my own bezels). Actually, I'm interested in any sort of jewelry design. I'm contemplating taking the jewelry certificate through Alberta College of Art and Design (ACAD) in a couple of years to learn some silversmithing and other skills (after my current course load is complete).

9. Please provide 5 random facts about yourself to help the team get to know you better. Thank you!

-I speak French, some Italian and some Spanish
-I love playing soccer, hiking, dancing (Salsa and West Coast Swing)
-I participated in the High River Christmas Craft Fair last year, and once these classes are over, would love to be at Market Collective in Calgary.
-My sister is Creative Darkside in Medicine Hat, but she doesn't have her store up yet - she makes fantastic hand-sewn toys for children
-My jewelry was bought by the TV show Heartland, and might be on TV this year!

2. What do you sell and why?

I sell an assortment of vinyl lettering and signs because I am a Graphic Sign Arts graduate from NAIT, and well they are so fun to make, I mean what 8 year old girl didn't wish they had their own sticker making machine!

I also sell an assortment of handmade gift items such as coffee cozies, bath & body products, necklaces, earrings, wall decor, candles, magnets and cards. My main focus is to provide a wide range thoughtful, crafty, useful gifts, and to maybe upcycle an old frame, tea cup or doily at the same time!

3. When and how you got started?

A few years ago I got the opportunity to work from home with my husband, (I do the artwork for our guitar pedals) which gave me the time to plan and create as well. My role with that is now smaller so I can focus on Fraidy Cat, so ultimately I am starting out now!

4. How did you decide on your shop name?

It came to me one day training at an awning shop, I had to make a banner to try a certain technique and Fraidy Cat was born!

5. Is there an item in your shop you enjoyed making the most and why?I could never decide! I just love making stuff! I make quite a wide range of products so I never feel like creating is anything but super fun!

6. What’s your favourite part of the selling experience?

My favourite part of the selling experience is selling! Ha! I really love meeting new people so that would be my favourite part!

7. Do you have a day job?

I work with my husband with our other business, Dr. Scientist Sounds, so I am lucky the other work I do is from home!

Yes, I am actually starting a 6 week silversmithing class in a couple days! I can't go long without signing up for some kind of artsy class!

1. I make guitar pedals with my husband from home, our company is called Dr. Scientist Sounds.

2. I have a maltese yorkie mix named Little Miss. She is such a bright light in our house, always up for a play and kisses!

4. I have been married to the man of my dreams for 2 blissful years. We drove to Vancouver Island and got married in Tofino in the Ancient Cedar Rainforest. It was just the 2 of us and will forever be my favourite day!

5. I have loved to paint, create, upcycle, give gifts and treasure hunt since I was a teenager. I even got a job a Salvation Army when I was 13!

Kendra - Twelve Twenty Three

1. Name (first only) and city/town you live in? Kendra and I live in Calgary

2. What you sell and why? I sell jewelry. Necklaces and earrings currently, bracelets and rings are going to be showing up soon! I sell them because I love how accessorizing with jewelry can completely change the look of an outfit, how it beings personality to what you wear.

3. When and how you got started? At first I started in 2009 because I was unemployed and needed a hobby to pass the time. People started asking me how much my pieces were, and it hit me then that "hey, I can sell these!" Along came etsy. I had another shop name at the time Uniquely You by KZ which, hate to say it, ignored as soon as I got an official 9-5 job. I am back to being in between jobs and decided to pick my hobby back up with a new name and a new outlook. This one is here to stay!

4. How did you decide on your shop name? My shop name is actually a date. Twelve:TwentyThree is December 23. It's significant to me because it is my fiancé and mines anniversary. Not only when we started dating, but also when he proposed. It makes me smile every time I see it and I also like that it is ambiguous. It can be a shop that sells anything and you can only find out what it sells when you click the link.

5. Is there an item in your shop you enjoyed making the most and why? I absolutely love making anything with lockets. Lots of charms. They are just fun and I like combining random pieces that just seem to work.

6. What’s your favourite part of the selling experience? I love knowing that handmade stuff is getting out there and that the crafters are getting recognition

7. Do you have a day job? Not at the moment, I am constantly looking for one but the longer I am out and just crating jewelry and being crafty the harder it is to go find that day job.

8. Are there other crafts you’d like to try? I really want to get into glassblowing

9. Please provide 5 random facts about yourself to help the team get to know you better.

(1) I actually have a degree in primatology, that's right. Monkeys

(2) I have two dogs- Luigi and Tobi, both of whom are adopted.

(3) I love taking photographs, especially black and white ones as I feel they provide more mystery.

(4) I work to travel.

(5)A completley random fact: I freak out a little in my head when I drive at night and the lampposts becomes extinguished when I drive past it. I feel as if it’s a warning.

Team Member Feature - Kiwi Tiny Creations (Kathy)

Kathy - Kiwi Tiny Creations

1. Name (first only) and city/town you live in?

Kathy, I live in Calgary.

2. What do you sell and why?

I sell gift tags, wedding favor tags, cupcake flags/toppers. I love the choices of colors and patterns on scrapbooking papers and I am just getting reaquainted with my sewing machine so I better stick with glue and scissors for now. I also try to think of light things to ship as opposed to heavier objects, especially when you have to compete with lower US post shipping rates

3. When and how you got started?

I really came up with the idea of an Etsy shop over night,sort of. Then stewed about it for a bit and finally realized I will never know if it will work out if I don't try. At first I made some cute felt pencil holders, but started designing gift tags, mini cards and cupcake flags. Now I am trying to develop more general birthday and baby shower items.

4. How did you decide on your shop name?

I think I had come across Kiwi Tini as a drink, it sounded fun and something that you might remember once you have heard it. I had a few other names but the popular vote among family and friends was Kiwi Tini Creations.

5. Is there an item in your shop you enjoyed making the most and why?

I love my white gift tags with the kraft sand dollars and second would be the starfish. I had this idea for a clean, simple, crisp look. Kinda like Calvin Klein clothes, if that makes any sense...anyway I love the look of beige on white.

6. What’s your favourite part of the selling experience?

I like it when I get to converse with my customers on an order. It's just nice to feel like you are dealing with a person even though it is on the computer.

7. Do you have a day job?

I am a Mom to two boys and I try and fit in Kiwi Tini when I can throughout the day. It always takes me longer to do something than I think it will take. LOL

8. Are there other crafts you’d like to try?

I would like to sew, hopefully tote bags or yoga bags, I have to brush up on my skills first and it's hard to fit that into my schedule right now.

9. Please provide 5 random facts about yourself to help the team get to know you better.

1. I am a third generation Calgarian, which is really quite rare!

2. I am a Royal Watcher and was really delighted to see The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge when they came to Calgary.

3. I'm a lefty.

4. I was a high school Science teacher before becoming a MOM.

5. I rarely walk by the computer without refreshing Etsy or checking my activity feed.LOL

Kerri - Ivry'd Willow

1. Name and city/town you live in? Kerri from Edmonton

2. What you sell and why? I sell handmade jewelry because I am a jewelry-a-holic! Seriously, it’s an addiction!

3. When and how you got started? I started making jewelry because I thought it would save me some money to make my own. I am crafty person and I was searching for a new outlet for the creative energy. My sister in law introduced me to beading and I instantly fell in love! I only started to turn it into a business when I realized how expensive this new hobby was becoming and that I was actually pretty good at it!

4. How did you decide on your shop name? Well, I wanted a name that meant something special to me and was unique. The Willow tree is my favorite tree and is a symbol of femininity and beauty. It actually has the Celtic meaning of inspired imagination. Ivory symbolizes fine craftsmanship. I chose Ivry’d because I wanted it to be like the willow tree (beautiful femininity) is made from Ivory (fine craftsmanship). I changed the spelling because I wanted it to be different. I do have to give props to my husband because he helped me come up with this name with a lot of brainstorming and discussion.

5. Is there an item in your shop you enjoyed making the most and why? No there really isn’t a favorite. All of my pieces are one of a kind and I don’t generally duplicate them. I might “reuse” the design but never with the same products. I find it way more fun to always be thinking of new designs even if it is just tweaking a tried a true one.

6. What’s your favorite part of the selling experience? My favorite part is by far the creative process. Once the piece is made I’d love to hand off the business side to someone else because that is definitely my least favorite part! I also love seeing someone fall in love with my creations. It’s a wonderful feeling to bring a smile to someone’s face especially when you know they appreciate the creative process that it took to make the piece of jewelry.

7. Do you have a day job? I do have a day job. I work as a unit clerk at the Cross Cancer Institute. I am also studying to be a nurse but I guess that would be my evening job.

8. Are there other crafts you’d like to try? Well, I dabbled in scrap booking and paper crafting awhile ago, which I loved. I still do but I just don’t have the time. I have branched into digital scrap booking but that’s only for me. I would really love to learn silversmithing to take my jewelry to the next level. But I think that will have to wait until I have more time on my hands!

Alberta Eats - Breakfast Quiche with Fresh Chives

Todays recipe comes from Ashley's (OffTheHooks) wonderful blog, The Lethbridge Veg.

Breakfast Quiche with Fresh Chives

Preheat oven to 350 C

In a bowl lightly beat:

5 eggs
1/2 c milk (as usual, i used almond) or plain yogurt
s &p to taste
any other dry spices you fancy

In a standard pie plate prepare the crust & fillings:

lightly spray or coat the pie plate with oil or butter
sprinkle breadcrumbs generously- shake from side to side gently to distribute evenly. My crust is usually a few mm thick
add your fillings- in this case about 3/4c cheese curds and 2-3 Tbsp chopped chives

Then gently pour the egg mixture over the crust & fillings. Cover with tinfoil and place in your pre-heated oven.
Bake for 20-25 min
then remove the tinfoil for the last 5-10 min of baking.
Quiche is done when eggs are set and quiche is slightly brown.
